Anglo-Saxon Illumination by kairanie Anglo-Saxon Illumination by kairanie
The Lord's Prayer in Anglo-Saxon (old English) illuminated as a gift for a linguistically minded friend.

Yes, that is English, just from a really long time ago.

You made this yourself? :+fav:
I really like the knots and such. And the font, too. It really looks like it's from that time.

Do you recommend any books on Old English? I'm trying to learn some.

I have this on a podcast!! I have a lot of Anglo-Saxon podcasts... (I'm kind of obsessed)

"Yes, that is English, just from a really long time ago." :D Reminds me of a time I told one of my friends about translating Old English, and he said, "How hard is that? It's just a bunch of 'thee's and 'thou's." To which I grabbed Beowulf and began reading it aloud..."Hwaet we gar-dena in geardagum..." That changed his mind, hehe :)

Anywho, this is beautiful work. I'm also obsessed with illumination. I can't do it, but I love looking at it! The "F" is very Book of Kells - esque. You have some nice knotwork here.

Thanks very much for your compliment. There's no way I could think up knots on my own; I have a book of Celtic designs that is immensely helpful.
I'm going to have to start putting up more illuminations. I've been practicing and doing more lately. Maybe in a couple of weeks...

I miss drawing Celtic knots.. I used to do them all the time. 'Course I haven't had much drawing time lately, so maybe I'll get back to them one day! :D They're a lot of fun... basically you can create any knot with variations on the four-strand braid, set in different shapes.

I'll be looking forward to the new illuminations!

Well, he didn't appreciate it as much as you would have, I'm sure, but he liked it well enough and it was a darn good first try at illumination. I was going to save making you something until I got a bit more practice in. I am open to commissions, though, you know, and I give 100% discounts to best friends. Or you can have Psalm 32 or John 12:24, if you like.

could you do me Isaiah 43:1-3 ? no hurry though. I suppose it is a bit of an unusual gift. maybe he'll appreciate it more in a few decades, once you've moved on to other things, and he no longer has another Anglo-Saxonist to talk to.
